The Home

This page is intended to supplement the guidance found in the Overview and Advisement page that walks a person through the various steps in Emergency Management. Those steps will guide you through the steps for becoming aware, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. The Resources page will then provide some guidance with respect to specific routines and tasks. Finally, the Current Conditions and Watches and Warnings pages will provide you with some of the tools that may be useful in watching for conditions (noting that you should be keeping tabs on your local and regional Emergency Management Office notifications).

Two Sub-categories

The house focuses on things that I have encountered in working on my own home. This work really comes in two forms. First, there are efforts made on my small part to improve the efficiency of my home. This gets down to what are being called mitigation measures (concentrating on reducing greenhouse gases) and adaptive measures (protecting against severe weather).

Renewable Energy

This falls under the general heading of climate mitigation or the reduction of Greenhouse Gasses (GHG).

Focusing on renewable energy and steps that can be taken to reduce the “carbon footprint,” these sub-pages look at renewable sources of energy, how to adjust activities to be more efficient and reduce greenhouse gases, and the like. The connection here to Emergency Management is in the mitigation (long term changes) that help to avoid or reduce the impacts of certain events.

These pages will grow and expand over time:

  • Notes on Solar Power.
  • Notes on Water Power (coming soon)
  • Routines that may help reduce the overall carbon footprint (coming soon)

House Protective Infrastructure

There is no long term if you don’t get through the short term. This section focuses on protecting the capability to continue living on in a reasonably comfortable manner. These are personal notes based on informed opinions, but should not be looked at in terms of legal or engineering guidance. These include:

Cyber in the Home

Some general cyber-related guidance can be found here.
