The International Association of Maritime Security Professionals (the Association) informed me today of a decision to support this effort. Two factors guided their decision. The gateway factor involved my connection with the Association. The determining factor followed a review of the work to date and its potential utility. Consequently, this project will benefit from a broader expertise and contributor base.
The Association has a significant history of assisting in capacity building efforts. Academically, its efforts have resulted in two university-level programs focused on maritime security. The first was established in the UK and operates at the graduate level. More recently, the Association has joined with Acadia University to offer the Professional Certificate in Maritime Security. This eight course (each course being eight weeks) is a unique offering in North America that blends post secondary education with industry accepted practices. Irving Shipbuilding supported this effort significantly through its ITB program.
Additionally, the Association has participated in activities ranging from broad consultations to the development of standards and online training.
As a result of the Association’s additional capacity, this project will be able to move in two directions. First, it will enable a deeper analysis and communication of issues. Additionally, it will allow this project to expand its geographic scope.
