The recent heavy snowfall in Sydney, Cape Breton revealed a potential issue with propane tanks. These may be stored near the structure and have lines that run to generators or into the structure. Where these tanks or lines are situated in a way that snow (or ice) falling from a roof can hit the lines or valves, issues can arise.
Most tanks come with a reasonably heavy cover that protects the valve. This should be closed. Also, take steps to protect the lines. This may include snow removal from the areas over the tank or other similar steps.
For those looking for a list of different things to consider, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has some guidance on steps that you can take to protect pipes. It was written for high snowfall areas in the USA but much of the guidance is useful here as well.
